Last weekend was one of the first busy weekend's of racing of the year with the juniors having 16 entries at Henley LDS whilst the women's squad went a bit further downstream for Kingston SBH.
The juniors are continuing their winning streak, with two wins and several other strong results at Henley Long Distance Sculls last weekend. The double of Holly Cookson and Izzy Cotten continued the clubs success within the girls J15 category with a win in the double over local rivals Marlow and A.B.Severn BC who finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Following on from her win at Reading Small Boats, Maddy Pollard racing up in the W.J18.1x held her own to finish 3rd in a tough field of 27 scullers.
Junior sculler, Cookson showing she is having an exceptional start to the 2017/18 season later went onto win the W.J15.1x in an impressive time of 14:19, under a minute faster than second place. It was fellow team-mate and doubles partner Izzy Cotten who made it a Reading RC 1 & 2 with Sophie Underwood in 5th. In what was the biggest race of the day with 84 entries the J18.1x, Will Pratt again showed his skill and speed in the single finishing 40th in a field of national medalist and potential trialists.
In Kingston, the women had a challenging day's racing with strong performances in the run up to Four's head this weekend but just missed out on the silverware. Fresh from their win at Reading Small Boats head the quad of Tash Stagg, Becca O'Connor, Kate Trend and Kirsty Reeman faced tough opposition in W.IM3.4x- as they finished fourth behind a 'storming' quad from Molesey and Mortlake AA.
Following the Quad, Becca teamed up with Hannah Bower to race in W.Nov.2x. just missing out to a crew from Surbiton High School who took the title. Not content with only racing once, Kirsty tackled the 5.2km course again this time on her own in the W.IM3.1x finishing second to the sculler from Tideway.
This weekend is set to be busy with the club split in many directions. Dan's start group head north to Nottingham for start camp, the juniors have a big contingent (and first outing for the new gazebo) at Pangbourne sculls. The vets kick off fours head weekend on Saturday with three crews entered with the seniors following on sunday with six crews entered across both the men and the women. Good Luck to everyone racing!
